Anna C. Roebuck, of
bags2riches was Gift of the Award
for Fashion 2004. Anna’s contemporary designs, are individually created
from recycled plastic bags and other found elements using techniques that
she has developed over the past few years.
Her aim; to create desirable objects from everyday waste.
Anna has always been interested in environmental
issues, including the concepts of recycling and sustainability and this
is central to her ideas. The core focus for her work is how materials can be
manipulated and recreated in to new and beautiful forms. Natural elements,
such as the sea and rock formations give Anna visual inspiration which is
transposed in to form, rhythms or patterns in her designs. 
The material is very versatile and lends itself to many applications so allowing Anna’s work to cross different boundaries of art, craft and design.
'I
have experimented with lots of different plastics, techniques, tools
and methods to differing degrees of success and finally devised a way of
using plastic bags. The
bags
and other materials are collaged together using heat to bond them together.
I create each piece by building up layers and so gradually developing a more
intricate design. I may include other elements such as newspaper, different
wires, (I often use silver and copper wire in my jewellery pieces), fabrics,
cotton and personal finds for my own pieces.
I love the versatility of the medium; it
can be very delicate, (e.g. multilayered light shades) or quite thick and
very sturdy, (the buttons). It is hard to predict the end result and so each
piece takes on a life of its own.'
